Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1952-1979.

This record group consists of four sets of records of the Michigan State Prison/State Prison of Southern Michigan. The first set of records are some of the warden's subject files (1955-19). The files include correspondence, reports, memoranda, and minutes relating to the daily functions of the warden's office. Topics range from capital punishment to the rights and privileges of inmates. The second set of records are of committees and conferences (1965-79). The topics relate to executive and legislative action concerning the operations of the prison and the Department of Corrections. Includes correspondence and reports relating to the 1952 riot. The third set of records are of medical research (1956-79). Topics include procedures and types of experimental drugs used on the inmates and includes correspondence between the pharmaceutical companies and the prison staff. The final set of records are newspaper clippings on the riot of 1952, as printed in the Jackson citizen patriot.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
